A new International Airport has been built at Sofia to accomodate the influx of European passengers. Regular flights from all major airports and Wizz Air have the best offers.

Kalina is 50 mins from the airport and is easily accessible for first time drivers.  Alternatively you can take the more scenic route up the mountains which will take slightly longer - 1 hr 15 mins..
